![]() The Music Gazette by Michael Buckley One of my heroes, SONiA of disappear fear, returns home for a show at The 8x10 club in Baltimore on Wednesday night (7 p.m.). This is a full-band show from the progressive singer, as she performs from her extensive catalog of politically charged songs. The band will feature current and past members of disappear fear along with special guest Freebo (Bonnie Raitt) on bass. Sisters SONiA and CiNDY (Rutstein) of Baltimore created the folk-pop duo disappear fear and released numerous albums, winning multiple awards such as the GLAAD Award for Best Album, a GLAMA award and Top Release of the Year by Mix Magazine. SONiA's song, "Me, was chosen by the Human Rights Campaign along with songs by U2 and others for their compilation CD. SONiA also has written several soundtracks, including one for the 2006 documentary film, "Autumn's Harvest," directed by Dave Marshall. The film is playing at film festivals around the world. SONiA is currently working on a musical that will be released in 2009 as well as a blues CD. When not on the road she does commissioned artwork, including paintings and large murals. Her record label, disappear records, donates 18 percent of every song downloaded to the United Nations World Food Programme to help end poverty around the globe. And in keeping with her message of global harmony, SONiA has created "Guitars for Peace," which helps bring acoustic guitars to children in war-torn countries. Two guitars have already been delivered. |
